All You Need to Know

What is Import Export Code (IEC)?

The Import Export Code (IEC) is a unique 10-digit identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. It is a mandatory requirement for any individual or business engaged in the import or export of goods and services from India. The IEC acts as the key business identification number for all international trade transactions. It is referenced by customs authorities, banks, and other government agencies for shipment clearance, foreign remittance, and trade documentation.

When is the Import Export Code Required?

The IEC is required at several important stages of foreign trade operations:

  • When an importer clears shipments from customs, the authorities require the IEC number.
  • When an importer remits foreign currency through banks to pay for goods or services imported.
  • When an exporter ships goods abroad, the customs port requires the IEC for clearance.
  • When an exporter receives foreign payments, banks ask for IEC details to process the remittance.
  • Note: The IEC is not required for goods or services imported or exported for personal use, or when carried out by government departments or notified charitable institutions.
